Le Beef Steakhouse – Marais in the heart of a historic district
The history of the Marais
The Marais is one of Paris’s most emblematic districts. Located in the city’s 3rd and 4th arrondissements, it’s known for its picturesque medieval streets, historic buildings and vibrant artistic community.
The history of the Marais goes back to the Middle Ages, when it was mainly a marshy area, hence its name. During the 17th century, the district became a favorite haunt of the nobility and bourgeoisie, leading to the construction of many elegant mansions and palaces, such as the Hôtel de Sully and the Hôtel de Sens.
After the French Revolution, the Marais went into decline. Its magnificent buildings were neglected or subdivided into smaller dwellings. It wasn’t until the 20th century, particularly in the 1960s, that the district was rediscovered. Restoration efforts were undertaken to preserve its architectural heritage, leading to the renovation of several of its historic monuments.
Today, the Marais is famous for its dynamic mix of cultures, with a strong presence of art galleries, fashion boutiques and a varied culinary scene. It is also the heart of Paris’ Jewish community, notably in the Pletzl, the historic Jewish quarter. In addition, it is a major center for the LGBTQ community, hosting numerous events and establishments geared towards this community.
The Marais is therefore a living testimony to Parisian history, a place where past and present meet harmoniously, attracting tourists and Parisians alike to its unique atmosphere.
Our location
Our first steakhouse was in the Marais. It was a great honor for us to be able to establish ourselves in such a beautiful and historically rich district, especially in the Rue des Rosiers.
Rue des Rosiers was first named in the 13th century, in 1230, because it was dotted with roses on both sides. The 303-meter-long street is emblematic of the Jewish community, with its many stores, food outlets, bookstores and typical restaurants. Since the 1980s, luxury boutiques have taken over, slowly changing the street’s appearance.
The street is also honored by a song entitled La Rue des Rosiers, sung by Pia Colombo in the 1960s and written by Silvain Reiner. It echoes the atmosphere of the time.
The Beef Steakhouse opened in June 2020, replacing the former Equinox brasserie restaurant. We chose this location for its centrality and its summer terrace overlooking the busy, touristy Rue des Rosiers. We decided to compose our menu around quality matured beef. Our simple cooking meant we could appeal to everyone, Parisians as well as French and foreign tourists with a taste for good meat.
